A 1930’s detatched property located in West Wickham required modernisation and reorganisation of the ground floor interior spaces. Situated on a sloping site the key challenge was to connect the living space with the garden. This connection needed to retain views of the woodland that bordered the garden whilst providing shade from the summer sun.
The scheme proposes an open plan family room with kitchen and dining alongside a small snug. Access to the garden uses a series of interlinking terraces that articulate the level changes. An enlarged overhanging roof to the extension provides shade to the internal spaces and acts to blur the division between the interior and exterior space.
